Sun’aq Tribal Enterprises: WildSource
The Sun’aq Tribe of Kodiak is proud to report on the development of Sun’aq Tribal Enterprises Inc., a Section 17 corporation, which purchased 100 percent ownership of Kodiak Island WildSource on January 8, 2010.
Federally chartered Section 17 corporations are tribal in character, must be wholly owned by the Tribe and are essentially “alter egos” of the Tribal Government. They share the same privileges and immunities as the Tribal Government. However, Section 17 incorporation provides a separation of the business entity from the Tribal Government body. The Corporation’s Board of Directors has control over the direction and business activities of the Corporation. While not involved in the day to day activities of the Corporation, the Tribal Council sets strategic economic policies.
RE: Special Notification on Salmon Sales
Dear Sun’aq Fishermen,
At the direction of the Board of Directors of Sun’aq Tribal Enterprises Inc., we are inviting and requesting participation from Sun’aq Tribal fishermen on opportunities for salmon sales to Kodiak Island WildSource, wholly owned by our Section 17 corporation, for the 2011 season. As you may have heard, the Tribal Enterprise has been blessed with a substantial three-year ANA development grant for the purpose of beginning to restore the Alutiiq fishery presence in our community that has been lost over the last 30 years.
Our brand, Kodiak Island WildSource, has been steadily gaining a reputation for quality and consistency with innovative wild salmon product forms in markets across the US. We have built this reputation by working with quality-minded Kodiak fishermen who have delivered their catch according to our specifications. The summer of 2011 will still have “relatively small” production targets to meet due to our limited processing infrastructure, however we do have steady growth plans and solid funding for the coming years. Initial participation by our members is critical to the success of this venture and we can assure highly competitive fish pricing as well as other assistance for our fishermen.
