Women’s Advocacy

The Sun’aq Tribe of Kodiak is dedicated to strengthening our capacity to prevent and intervene in instances of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking crimes against Kodiak Native women.

In 2007 we recieved a Department of Justice OVW grant to improve delivery of services to Native women who are victims of domestic violence/sexual assault. August 31, 2010 was the last day of the award, prior to new program funding just beginning. The following highlights activities for the period of January 1-August 31, 2010.

Provide culturally appropriate and vital victim services to Kodiak Native Women:

  • We provided advocacy services to 12 Kodiak Native Women who were victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault or stalking, including 45 crisis interventions; 102 counseling, education and support services in individual or group setting; assisted victims to obtain support, resources and other essential services, as well as facilitated a women’s support group.
  • Improve quality of victim services and provide its continuum:

  • We have provided 5 trainings to Kodiak professional and 2 trainings to volunteers involved in violence prevention and intervention; developed and distributed two new brochure titles; attended numerous meetings with other agencies to provide comprehensive victim services. We collaborate with other victim services organizations to ensure victims’ safety and offender accountability. The Native Women’s Advisory Committee as a steering team for the program that meet quarterly for program’s evaluation and further development. We are inviting Kodiak Native women to join our dedicated group in family violence prevention and intervention.
  • Improve accessibility of services for victims:

  • We developed and implemented strategies, activities and products to inform the entire community about available services (PSA, articles, brochures/booklets, manuals and handouts); we’ve provided outreach and education to Native women in Kodiak (17 educational and outreach events & activities) and facilitated Native women gatherings and support/traditional crafts group meetings (weekly), developed and implemented activities and products to empower Native women in Kodiak to deal with domestic violence/sexual assault issues.
  • About

    Our Tribal staff of 16 runs a 6,000-square foot office in the Sun’aq Tribal Center building in Kodiak, Alaska. Our administrative offices are on the second floor of the Sun’aq Tribal Center, located in the heart of downtown Kodiak.
