Community Service Block Grant Emergency Shelter and Food Allowance

This program is offered to individuals and/or families who require assistance with essential needs—such as food, clothing, shelter and utilities—as the result of hard times or unusual circumstances. Participants must be living at or below poverty guidelines and must meet Bureau of Indian Affairs eligibility requirements, must be Alaska Native (enrolled to ANY tribe) and must live in the Kodiak area. Applicants may submit a funding request for up to $500 once per fiscal year. The tribal program services director can assist applicants file the application paperwork.

General Assistance

The General Assistance program is a secondary resource, which means that an individual must have exhausted all other avenues of assistance before applying. Through this program, participants develop and implement a plan for self-sufficiency and learn about local, state, and national resources available to address their particular needs. The program also provides financial assistance until participants can support themselves. Applicants do not need to be enrolled to Sun’aq but do need to be Alaska Native (enrolled to ANY tribe) and live in the Kodiak area.

Burial Assistance

Individuals who need assistance in covering the cost of death-related expenses can apply to this program after exhausting other options . The benefit covers up to $2,500 for each burial of which $400 may be used for a meal. The tribe can also assist with ordering a casket for the deceased. This is an “area-based” program and is for Alaska Natives who live in Kodiak.

Emergency Assistance

This program deals specifically with personal emergencies; it helps Natives whose homes have been destroyed due to fire or flood and/or have suffered loss or damage to their personal possessions. Emergency Assistance funds are for essential needs and non-medical necessities only. The maximum pay out is up to $1,000 per household.

Our Tribal staff of 16 runs a 6,000-square foot office in the Sun’aq Tribal Center building in Kodiak, Alaska. Our administrative offices are on the second floor of the Sun’aq Tribal Center, located in the heart of downtown Kodiak.
